Why We Need More Female Traders On Wall Street- Shekhar's Tech-Finance

One can only imagine that professional traders are, um, slightly more confident than the average home trader.

It’s important to keep in mind, however, that a relative lack of confidence about financial matters does not actually mean that women are less knowledgable about the subject, or less able to succeed in the business of pushing it around chaotically. (There are studies other than Odean and Barber’s to suggest the opposite is true.) Mostly, it means they’re more likely to be thoughtful, which is hardly a bad thing, even at high speeds. Almost 20 years ago to the day  some one wrote a cover story for Money magazine with the cover line, “Why Women Can Be Smarter Than Men About Money.” The story detailed the five ways women, by their nature, tend to outperform men when the playing field is otherwise level:
Meet the women trading on the stock market...

1. They’re quicker to admit ignorance.
2. They’re more likely to seek help and advice from others.
3. They’re better at specific goal-setting.
4. They do more “homework.”

5. They’re generally more cautious about risk.

That last trait, apparently, is especially underrepresented at JPMorgan Chase.
But an increase in all five qualities on his trading desk most likely sounds pretty good to Jamie Dimon right about now.

10 Things You Need to Know About India's Stock Market-Shekhar's Tech-Finance

Today we have a very special treat –Nitin Rao is a blogger in the Indian markets, but he blogs in English at his brand new site Alpha Ideas.  As regular readers know, I’m fascinated with the markets of emerging and frontier nations.  As such, I’ve asked Nitin to write a guest post to reveal some not so well-known facts on the Indian markets.  This is great stuff. – JB

10 Things You Need to Know About India’s Stock Market
 1. Equity Averse: Indians are hugely equity averse.  Only 1.2% of the Indian household financial savings is directly invested in shares (2010-2011).  This amounts to a laughable figure of 2.5 Billion dollars for the entire Indian household population .
2. Low Participation:  In a country of 1.2 billion, there are only 20 Million demat accounts (ed: a dematerialised account for individual Indian citizens to trade in listed stocks or debentures in electronic form) and 248 portfolio managers.
3. Foreigners vs Locals:  Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) hold a larger stake in listed Indian companies (10.45%) than the combined stake of Indian Mutual Funds (2.68%) and Indian Financial Institutions/Insurance Companies (5.32%)
4.  Inflows vs Outflows:  In January -March of 2012, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) invested  $8.89 Billion in the Indian stock markets.  In the same period, domestic institutions such as mutual funds, insurance companies etc sold around $4 Billion worth.
5. Total Market Cap to GDP:  The current (2011) Market Cap to GDP ratio is around 86.  In the last 19 years, the ratio ranged from a low of 25.1 (!) in 1992-93 to a high of 101 in 2007-2008.
6. Exchanges: The two main stock exchanges for Equity Trading in India are the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE). BSE is the oldest stock exchange in Asia and claims to have the largest number of listed companies in the world.  However, of the 8900 scrips (stocks) listed, only about a third (around 3000) are traded every day.
7. Volume: The daily turnover in the Equity Cash segment of National Stock Exchange (NSE) is around $3 billion and that of Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) is half a billion dollars. Three fourths (75%) of the turnover can be attributed to the top 100 scrips.
8. Derivatives: The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has a monopoly in the Equity Derivatives market.  It ranks very high in global rankings for the number of contracts traded – 2nd in Stock Index Options, 3rd in Stock Index Futures and 3rd in Single Stock Futures.  The daily turnover in the derivatives segment is around $30 Billion.
9.  Brokers vs Algos:  Around 70% of the trading volume is done by the top 100 brokers.  Algorithmic and co-location trading accounted for about 25% of derivatives volume and around 30% of equities volume on the NSE and BSE.
10.  Foreign Investors Now Welcome:  Earlier foreign citizens were prohibited from trading directly in the Indian stock markets but since Jan 2012, these restrictions are withdrawn and now they are permitted to invest freely.

Thanks Nitin!  I have a theory that frontier and emerging market stocks have their biggest moves upon the moment of discovery and the floodtide of liquidity.  We’ve seen it with the BRICs and with Eastern Europe and Latin America.  In the next decade, I believe India will be re-discovered now that it’s opening its markets up to outside capital in this way, I am just as excited about India.

Greece expects bailout deal with lenders in two weeks: Shekhar's Tech-Finance

Greece expects to conclude a multi-billion-euro deal with international lenders within two weeks, with the drafting of an accord set to start on Wednesday.
A bailout worth up to 86 billion euros ($94.5 billion), needs to be settled by Aug. 20 if Greece is to pay off debt of 3.5 billion euros to the European Central Bank that matures on that day.
It will be the indebted nation's third bailout since 2010, designed to stave off bankruptcy and keep the country from toppling out of the euro zone.
"The first phase of negotiations ends today and the second phase starts, which really contains the details of drafting (the deal)," Olga Gerovasili, the government spokeswoman, said on Tuesday, speaking of discussions launched with lenders in the last week of July.
The drafting of the accord would start on Wednesday, Gerovasili told Skai TV station.
European Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici has said that, while ambitious, a deal is possible in August. Past negotiations between Greece and its lenders have proved tortuous.
"If the terms of the (EU) summit are met, I think that we will have a deal by the 18th of this month," Gerovasili said.
Greece and its EU partners clinched a last-minute deal in July on a reform program including privatizations and pension reform and scrapping tax breaks for groups such as farmers.
Lenders want, for example, an increase in the retirement age to 67 from the nominal 62 that falls significantly depending on numbers of years worked and family status.
On Monday, Greece and lenders agreed that any pension reforms would not affect individuals who retired before the end of June 2015. Talks on Tuesday were shifting onto issues related to the recapitalization of banks and privatization matters.
"We are determined to pursue a deal, and be tough in negotiations until the last minute," the Greek official said.
Asked about the timing of the adjustment which is a thorny topic among farmers, Gerovasili said: "One of the positives of this agreement is that it has a three-year horizon of steady financing. This gives us some room to gradually phase them in ...because today we are in a difficult financial situation and there must be some time for a small recovery."
Greece's finance and economic ministers were due to meet international lenders later on Tuesday to discuss privatizations and bank recapitalization.
